AI training and inference have created simultaneous demand for two kinds of storage that used to compete for budget sequentially: high-capacity nearline hard drives for hyperscale datasets, and fast NAND flash for active training pipelines. NAND manufacturers, still cautious after the 2022–2024 oversupply, have kept output flat — so 2026 production is largely spoken for before it ships. The result: NAND contract prices have moved by roughly 50% in single adjustments this year, and client SSD prices have climbed at least 40% quarter over quarter. Relief isn't expected until new fabrication capacity comes online in 2027.
